After last weeks 'What's in it Wednesday' a few people said they were a bit confused about labelling on their food and what it all meant!  So this week I am going to try and explain labels for you!

Firstly understand that food manufacturers and supermarkets are businesses, they have shareholders and are in business to make money for their them and are NOT going to help you and me lose weight and live healthily!

So we have to learn to ignore the labels on the front of the packets that make it all sound healthy and the best thing since...er...sliced bread which actually isn't that good.... ;-)

These labels promote all the supposedly good things about the product 'Contains real fruit' - maybe but only 1% and it definitely won't tell you that it contains a load of crapas well!

So ignore the bright shiny front of packaging labels that are there to distract you and turn over and read that stuff that they print so small that even if you have 20:20 vision you need some reading glasses or a magnifying glass to make sense of!  Hmmm I wonder why that is..... care to have a guess anyone?

The list of ingredients is always in the order of highest weight first so check out the list to see what is in it! You may be surprised!

So Special K - really good for you right? Er.... wrong!  Well unless you want to eat a load of sugar......and you know what I think of sugar! Email me if you don't and are brave enough to listen to a rant!! ;-)

Special K Ingredients

Rice, Sugar, Wheat (Wholewheat, Wheat Flour), Wheat Gluten, Freeze Dried Fruits (5%) {Raspberry, Strawberry, Cherry}, Defatted Wheatgerm, Dried Skimmed Milk, Salt, Barley Malt Flavouring, Vitamin C, Niacin, Iron, Vitamin B6, Riboflavin (B2), Thiamin (B1), Folic Acid, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12.

Ah but Rich we know that's not that good so we buy that healthy Granola stuff....ah you mean that Jordan's Super Berry Granola that claims it "Lowers cholesterol. High fibre. No added salt. Non GM. No artificial flavourings, colourings or preservatives."

Oh ok ....that's...oh....er...hang on what's that?  What's the second highest ingredient in that then....

Jordan's Super Berry Ingredients

British Wholegrain Oat Flakes (72%), Raw Cane Sugar, Vegetable Oil (Rapeseed Oil, Palm Oil), Freeze Dried Berries (2.5%) (Whole Blackcurrants, Whole Blueberries, Sliced Cranberries), Pumpkin Seeds (2%), Flaked & Chopped Almonds (2%), Sunflower Seeds (1%), Honey (1%), Natural Flavouring

Don't be fooled by the glitzy marketing, look a bit deeper! The best bet is to buy food that doesn't have a list of ingredients - you are pretty safe then! Simple really!

What about the Nutritonal Information? That can be a mine field as well -  I'll cover that next week!

Let me know if there are any foods or ingredients you want to know more about.

More next week!
